The genus Ariocarpus contains six species in two subgenera. All of them occur primarily in the Chihuahuan Desert from the Rio Grande to the Mexican Plateau. The most famous of these species is Ariocarpus fissuratus. Ariocarpus cacti are endangered and quite rare in the wild.
